TODAY’S SCRIPTURE : Job 16-18 chapters DEVOTION
Job 16:1–2 (AMP) “Then Job answered and said, I have heard many things; wearisome and miserable comforters are you all.” Job’s friends came to comfort him but their words only added to his pain. Instead of encouraging, they condemned. In his anguish, Job calls them “miserable comforters.” Job’s words reveal how can we be better comforters in others pain.
Are we truly comforting or unknowingly hurting? Being a good comforter is not about having the right words, quoting of relevant scriptures but it’s having the right heart.
A TRUE COMFORTER
1. STAYS SILENT
Sometimes silence speaks louder than words. We don’t always need to fill the space with advice.
2. WILLING TO LISTEN
Listen to what they have to say. Listening can be more healing than speaking quickly. When people feel heard, they feel valued.
3. DON’T CRITICISE
Criticism has no place in someone’s pain. It only deepens their wounds.
4. EMPATHETIC TO OTHERS
Empathy is putting ourselves in their shoes and allows us to relate to them. When we step into their situation, we reflect on God’s compassion.
5. ENCOURAGE
Encouragement brings strength. A kind word or a thoughtful act can lift a heavy heart.
In 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (AMP) “Therefore encourage and comfort one another and build up one another.” A true comforter goes beyond words. It is expressed through their action. Let your life be a source of encouragement speaking hope and showing love in tangible ways. I know all of us are busy with our own works but pause and think of someone who is going battling a disease or suffering or going through a difficult terrain, go meet them, if not call and talk to them and be a blessing to others. If possible buy them flowers or chocolates or world’s famous Hyderabadi biryani anything you wish to.
PRAYER
Dear God, give me wisdom and sensitivity to encourage others in their difficult moments. Help me to listen, speak and act with love. Amen.
