DEVOTION
This is the only place in the Bible where a Gentile ruler is explicitly called “the Lord’s anointed.” It reminds us that God’s authority extends over every nation and every ruler. He chooses whom He wills to accomplish His purposes.
Cyrus was the founder of the Achaemenid Persian Empire. Historically, his empire stretched across approximately 2,000 miles, making it one of the largest empires of its time. It included territories that had once belonged to the Assyrian and Babylonian empires.
Why did God anoint Cyrus, a pagan king?
God had a specific purpose for Cyrus. He appointed him to fulfill His plan for Israel. Cyrus would permit Jerusalem to be rebuilt and would release the Jewish exiles without demanding payment or reward (see Ezra 1:1–4). In this way, Cyrus did more for God’s people than many of the kings of Israel and Judah.
This passage reminds us that when God determines to accomplish His will, nothing can prevent it. Through the prophet Isaiah, God foretold Cyrus’s role long before it happened, demonstrating that His plans unfold exactly as He intends.
Has God given you a promise?
Does it seem impossible?
Like king Cyrus he will choose anyone or in anyway to make that promise to come to pass. If God has promised it shall come to pass no matter what. He will work in ways we cannot see and expect.
Remember that the One who made the promise is faithful. His timing may not always match ours, but His word never fails. Trust Him to fulfill His promises according to His perfect will and timing.
PRAYER
God, thank You for showing that You are sovereign over all nations and rulers. Just as You used Cyrus to fulfill Your purpose and bring freedom to Your people, I know that nothing can stop Your plans for my life. Help me to trust Your promises, even when I cannot see how they will come to pass. Strengthen my faith to wait patiently for Your perfect timing. Thank You for being faithful to every word You have spoken. In Jesus name, Amen.
