Jeremiah 42 Chapter
CONTEXT
After Babylon destroyed Jerusalem in 586 BC, a small remnant of people remained in Judah under the leadership of Johanan. After Gedaliah, the appointed governor, was assassinated, the people became afraid of the Babylonians and believed that fleeing to Egypt would be the safest option.
So they came to Jeremiah and asked him to pray and seek God’s direction. They promised that they would obey whatever God said whether it is favorable or unfavorable.
But there was a problem because they already made up with their minds. They wanted God’s guidance, but only if His answer agreed with what they had already chosen to do.
This is a powerful warning for us.
Sometimes, we can pray not because we are willing to obey God, but because we want God to approve what we have already decided. God is not deceived by our words. He sees the intentions of our hearts.
Before asking God, “Lord, what should I do?”
we should honestly ask ourselves
“Am I truly willing to do whatever God tells me?”
It is easy to say, “Your will be done,” when God’s will matches our desires. True surrender is revealed when His answer is different from what we wanted.
“Lord, I am willing to obey You, even when Your answer is not the one I hoped for.”
PRAYER
Lord, search my heart and know my intentions where I am trying to get You to approve my plans instead of surrendering to Yours. Give me an honest heart that seeks Your will above my own desires. Help me to pray with a genuine willingness to obey, even when Your answer is difficult or different from what I expect.
Let the intentions of my heart be pleasing to You.
