9 JULY 2026, DAY 190 – WHY DISCIPLINE MATTERS

TODAY’s SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 28-31Chapters

DEVOTION

“To discipline a child produces wisdom, but a mother is disgraced by an undisciplined child.”
Proverbs 29:15 (NLT)

Discipline?

It almost feels like a word that doesn’t belong in the 21st century, doesn’t it? The more “progressive” our thinking becomes, the more we believe we no longer need discipline. Unlike many of our parents, who grew up with clear boundaries and correction, today’s culture often values freedom above everything else.

However, the freedom the world offers is deceptive. Instead of leading to true freedom, it often leads to bondage. A life without godly boundaries eventually becomes trapped by sin, unhealthy habits, and destructive choices.

The concept of discipline has gradually disappeared from our culture. But look at the results: rising violence among children, teenagers who struggle to distinguish right from wrong, and a growing lack of respect for parents, teachers, and other authorities.

That is why Proverbs says that a child who receives no discipline brings disgrace to his or her mother. Children need loving correction to develop wisdom and learn the difference between right and wrong. While pastors, youth leaders and Sunday school teachers play an important role, nothing can replace the influence of parents who faithfully teach and guide their children at home.

The Bible reminds us that discipline is an expression of love.

“For the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”
Hebrews 12:6 (NLT)

Just as God’s discipline demonstrates His love for us as His children, the loving discipline of our parents reflects their love for us as sons and daughters. When discipline is given for the right reasons and rooted in love, it provides children with security, direction, and a sense of belonging.

As teenagers and young adults, we often crave complete freedom. Yet, as we mature, we realize that freedom without boundaries can lead us down a path of destruction. While discipline may feel restrictive in the moment, it shapes our character and leads us toward God’s best for our lives.

The next time your parents lovingly correct you, receive it with humility. Look beyond the correction and recognize the love behind it. Their discipline is not meant to hurt you but to help you become the person God created you to be.

PRAYER

Dear God, thank You for giving me parents who lovingly discipline me, and thank You for the way You also discipline me because You love me. Help me to receive correction with humility and a teachable heart. Lead me on the right path. Give me the wisdom and strength to obey my parents and follow Your ways, even when it is difficult. In Jesus name, Amen
